Riso Ink Basics (2026): Colors, Types, and Costs | chameleon

Everything buyers and designers need to know about riso ink — what it's made of, how many colors exist, F2 type, whether it's waterproof, how long it lasts, and what it costs. If you're sourcing compatible riso ink, see our China compatible ink supplier guide before you order.

    What Is Riso Ink?

    🖨
    Core concept

Riso ink is an oil-based pigment ink used exclusively in RISO printing machines — both high-speed ComColor inkjet printers and older risograph stencil duplicators.

Unlike regular inkjet or laser ink, riso ink is semi-transparent, plant-based, and applied without heat. Each color runs through its own dedicated cartridge or drum.

What Is Riso Ink Made Of?

    🌱
    Formula & ingredients
    Component Role
Soy / rice oil Carrier base — plant-derived, low odor
Pigment colorant Color and fade resistance
    Dispersant Keeps particles evenly suspended
Viscosity modifier Matches print head specifications (10–11cp)

Particle size is kept at ≤200nm — fine enough to pass through nozzles without clogging, even after weeks of idle time.

Is Riso Ink Soy-Based — and Is It Toxic?

    ✅
    Safety
    ✓ Soy / plant-based   ✓ Non-toxic

Yes — riso ink uses soy or rice bran oil as its carrier base. It contains no petroleum solvents and releases no harmful VOCs during printing.

Safe for schools, offices, and food-adjacent environments. Chameleon compatible ink carries MOAH/MOSH certification confirming mineral oil safety compliance.

How Many Colors Does Riso Ink Come In?

    🎨
    Color range
75+ colors across all RISO series
Black Cyan Magenta Yellow Gray Bright Red Green Purple Fluoro Pink Orange

Because riso ink is semi-transparent, layering two colors creates a third — dramatically expanding the effective palette.

    Is There White Riso Ink?

    ⚪
    White ink
    ✗ Not available for ComColor

White riso ink does not exist as a standard product for RISO ComColor machines. The ink is semi-transparent by design — it relies on the paper's white base to create light tones.

For risograph stencil machines (SF/RZ series), some specialty suppliers offer white ink for dark paper, but it is not part of the standard RISO product line.

    What Is Riso Black Ink?

    ⬛
    Most used color

Black is the most widely used riso ink color — available in every series from the classic F2 Type to GL, GD, FT, FW, X1 and CC.

    Series Black part number
    GL9730 / GL7430 S-8446E
    GD9630 / GD7330 S-7280
    FT5430 / FT5230 S-8929
    FW5230 / FW1230 S-7250

What Is Riso Ink F2 Type?

    📦
    Specific format

F2 Type is the ink format used in RISO's older stencil duplicator machines — SF, RZ and EZ series. Tube-format cartridge, primarily available in Black.

    Detail
    Part number S-8113UA / S-8113E
Format Tube / roll — not a box cartridge
    Compatible with SF5030, SF5130, RZ200, RZ300, EZ200
ComColor compatible? No — different system entirely

    Is Riso Ink Waterproof?

    💧
    Water resistance
    ⚠ Partially

Riso ink is not fully waterproof. Once fully dried into uncoated paper, it becomes relatively water-resistant — but will smear if wet before drying.

For water-resistant applications, finishing with a matte laminate is recommended.

Does Riso Ink Dry — and How Long Does It Take?

    ⏱
    Drying time
    ✓ Yes, it dries
    Stage Time
    Touch-dry 15–30 minutes (uncoated paper)
    Handle-safe 1–2 hours
    Fully cured 24 hours

Faster on uncoated, absorbent paper. Coated or glossy stock slows drying and risks smearing.

How Long Does Riso Ink Last in Storage?

    📅
    Shelf life
24 months from production date, sealed

Store at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and heat. Do not freeze. Above 30°C, reduce buffer stock to 3 months.

How Much Does Riso Ink Cost?

    💰
    Pricing
    RISO OEM
    ~$400+
    per 1,000ml cartridge
    Chameleon compatible
    from $50
    per 1,000ml · factory direct
